Film Fest PSA winners announced
First event engages filmmakers from across Northeast

PROVIDENCE – The winners of a first-time, one-week competition that challenged teams of filmmakers to write, shoot and edit public service announcements in just seven days for Big Sisters of Rhode Island and Sensational Child, were announced at a Feb. 23 event at the Comedy Connection in East Providence.

The competition, called “7DAYPSA,” was created by Flickers Arts Collaborative, the producers of the Rhode Island International Film Festival. The competing teams, called “agencies,” had to work within a strict seven-day time limit. George T. Marshall, CEO and executive director of Flickers, along with Duncan Putney and Andre Stark of Original Concept and Development Associates, presented the awards. The winners were:

• The Best Public Service Announcement was won by Smoky Quartz Productions of New Hampshire, which also took home Best Directing, Best Cinematography and Best Editing.

• The 2nd Place Public Service Announcement was awarded to Providence’s Udris Film Ltd., which also won the Final Draft Best Writing award and the Best Actor award to be shared by the entire cast.

• The 3rd Place Public Service Announcement was won by Black Screen Studios of Boston, which also took home the Best Animation award.

• Rhode Island’s Rhinosaur Pictures won Best Voice Over in addition to an Official Client Selection award.

• J. Ryan Solutions mentored a teenage filmmaker team from Maverick Landing in Boston that garnered an Official Client Selection award.

The client-selected PSAs will be aired throughout the year by local television media sponsors, including WJAR-TV NBC 10, WLWC-TV CW 28, WLNE-TV ABC 6 and Cox Communications.

“The 7DAYPSA competition was created right here in Rhode Island; it is now expanding to other cities across the nation. This first event was designed as a template for all future events,” said Marshall.

“This competition is a great way for filmmakers to be proactive about their careers and their karma,” said Putney.

Sponsors of the competition, in addition to WJAR, WLWC, WLNE, and Cox Communications, included: the 989 Project, Brooklyn Coffee Tea House, the Comedy Connection, Craved Concepts, Cronk Software, Final Draft, LDI Casting, Moviemaker Magazine, Nara Hookah Lounge, OCD Associates, Pizza Pie-er, the Rhode Island State Film & TV Office, Sysco Boston LLC, Tazza Caffé and Virtual Pitch Fest.

For the third time, the Rhode Island International Film Festival and WJAR-TV NBC 10 won the
Community/Public Service Campaign award for a campaign entitled Canisters.the campaign
consisted of two commercials written by Duncan Putney, produced by Demetria Carr, directed by
William Smyth, and scored by Miraj Berry. George T. Marshall served as executive producer.
The spots featured Richard Donnelly and Phyllis Kay of Trinity Repertory Company.
They aired on WJAR in July and August.
These classy, memorable spots have served to brand the festival and created quite a buzz when
they were released last year, said Marshall, the film festivals executive director, who accepted the
award. They tell a story about the power and influence of the movies on each individual in our society.
The film festival won the same Emmy in 2003 and 2008, and also was nominated in 2005.

All four spots were directed by Smyth, who has been working with Marshall since 1986,
when Smyth was a film studies major at Rhode Island College
and Marshall was an assistant professor of communications.
